Zigzag stitch along the top and bottom right at the
line where the wool yarn starts on each end.

SEWING

Using the handwoven fabric as a cutting guide, cut out
pieces of lining fabric and interfacing in the same shape
and size as the woven fabric. Press fusible interfacing to the
wrong side of the lining fabric.

Fold the handwoven fabric in half, right sides together,
and sew the side seams with a ½" seam allowance. Do
the same with the lining fabric.

With the wrong side still out, fl atten the bottom corners
on both the handwoven and lining fabric bags with the
side seams centered on the bottom fold. Determine the width
you want the bottom to be and sew across the points to cre-
ate a fl at bottom.

Turn both bags right side out and steam-press the folds
in the ends and bottom to give the bag shape.

Attach the handles to each side of the handwoven fabric
bag.

Turn the top of the lining under ½" to the wrong side
and press. Insert the lining into the bag with the right
side of the lining on the inside of the bag, wrong sides of the
lining and handwoven fabric together.

Turn under ½" of the handwoven fabric toward the
inside of the bag. Handsew the handwoven fabric to the
lining. Steam-press the top fold fl at.

Washing is not recommended. Use a damp cloth for
spot cleaning.

CONSTANCE HALL weaves and spins and finds the whole process magical.
It’s the doing of it.

Each row in this chart
represents 3 picks, a, b, and c,
as outlined in the pick-up
weaving sequence in step 8.
Use the colors as indicated in
the columns for each pick.

  • To understand how krokbragd works, it’s helpful to think of it as
weaving a picture made up of pixels. The fi rst pick, heddle up
and pick-up stick A engaged, lays down 25 percent of the pix-
els. The second pick with the heddle up and string heddles
engaged leaves 25 percent more pixels. The last pick, with the
heddle down, fi lls in the last 50 percent of the pixels, making up
1 row. It takes all 3 picks to fi ll in 1 row of the pattern.

  • When a warp thread is down, the yarn pixel will be on the sur-
face. When the warp thread is up, the weft pick goes under and
will be hidden, not contributing to the pixels. The weaving
sequence never changes. The colors may change, but never the
    weaving sequence.

  • If you are changing colors often, good edges can be a chal-
lenge when weaving krokbragd. This bag is a good fi rst project
to practice on because the edges will be hidden in the seam
allowances. Run inactive weft up the side if it will be used again
in the next row, but if you won’t be using it for a few rows, cut it,
leaving a 6" tail to be woven in later.

  • If your weft doesn’t catch the selvedge end, loop the shuttle
around the end before putting the shuttle into the shed.

  • Bubble your weft generously to fully cover the warp and reduce
    draw-in.
