PIN LOOM Project

AFTER ADMIRING THE PLAID PROJECTS in Handwo-
ven throughout the years, I began to wonder if I could weave
plaid with a pin loom. Pin-loom weaving is weaving, aft er all,
so the basic rules still apply. To get the plaid eff ect, the
various colors need to crisscross in the warp and the weft.
Th at can be done manually by changing yarn colors as you
warp the loom and when you weave, or you can let it happen
naturally by using certain kinds of variegated yarn.

STRUCTURE
Plain weave.
EQUIPMENT
4" x 4" pin loom; 5" weaving needle; tapestry needle;
size G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook (optional).
YARNS
Warp, weft, and assembly: Everyday (100% acrylic; 203
yd/113 g; Premier), #100-24 Steel, 310 yd; #100-12 Black,
570 yd; #100-01 Snow White, 203 yd. Everyday Plaid
(100% acrylic; 360 yd/200 g; Premier), #1073-13 Red
Black Plaid, 342 yd.
DIMENSIONS
Woven squares: 156 squares, 4" x 4" on loom.
Finished size: 44" x 48".

Following the loom manufacturer’s directions, weave 156
plain-weave squares following the chart in Figure 1 and
the directions for weaving vertical stripes, horizontal stripes,
horizontal and vertical stripes, and plaid squares.

Follow the layout in Figure 2 for square placement.
Double overcast or whipstitch the squares together.
Weave in the ends.

Optional: Crochet an edge around the outside edge in
black using single crochet stitches, making 16 stitches
per square and chaining 2 in the corner; join with a slip stitch.

SQUARES WITH VERTICAL STRIPES
Warp the fi rst layer with 5 strands in the main color, then 6
strands in the stripe color, fi nishing with 5 strands of the main
color. As you warp, cut the yarn when you change colors, leav-
ing a tail and tying that tail to the next color. Do not cut the
main color the second time you use it. Continue with the main
color for the other 3 layers.

SQUARES WITH HORIZONTAL STRIPES
Warp the square’s fi rst 3 layers using the main color. Do not cut
the warp; instead, wrap the yarn 2 times around the pins and
use it to weave the fi rst 5 rows of the fourth layer. Leave a tail to
tie to the stripe color. Wrap the stripe color around the outside
of the pins 2½ times for the length needed for the stripe sec-
tion. Weave 6 rows using the stripe color, leaving a tail at the
beginning and end to tie to the main color weft. Wrap the
main color around the outside of the pins 2½ times to fi nish
the last 5 rows. Tie the color-changing tails together to make
the loops you will need when sewing the squares together.

SQUARES WITH HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL
STRIPES

Warp the fi rst layer with 5 strands in the main color,
then 6 strands in the vertical stripe color, fi nishing with
5 strands of the main color. As you warp, cut the yarn when
you change colors, leaving a tail and tying that tail to the next
color. Do not cut the main color the second time you use it.
Continue with the main color for layers 2 and 3.
