Easy to achieve with

Every example is different
I think your mag is great, but reading the
MX-5 review (August) got me thinking.
I have had three MX-5s and none of them
drives as was described in the feature. I felt
you were describing issues with that
particular example, rather than the model in
general. And that’s what made me think that
when cars get to 20 years plus they will all
be different. I don’t think it’s enough to drive
one example – I think you should be driving
two or even three to get a thorough picture.
This seems to be repeated in many of your
drives. Including more cars would give a
better overall impression of the model.

That particular car was from Mazda’s
own heritage fleet, so it’s a great example.

Sorry about that Nikki. It looked great.

Never remember seeing one of these.
Bet it was great on the motorways,
back in the day.
ALEX MATTHEWS
This, the E28 and the E39 are the best-
looking cars that have ever been
produced by BMW.
GAVIN COOK

Greatest era. This has the high quality
velour, eclipsed by buffalo leather.
STE VE COU LTE R

I had a BMW 735i SE at the same time
as a Mercedes W126 300SE. The Merc
had far better build quality but the

E23 was nicer in every other way. The
handling was amazing on a set of E
cross spokes.
SI LOCK
I remember having a ride in one when
they were brand new. BMWs were rare
back then and they got lots of attention.
Now they are two-a-penny.
This was the peak era of BMW! The
shark nose has gone and BMW cars are
normal-looking now.
PAUL LEWIS

Brilliant car – better than any BMWs
being made today.
MARC LITTLEFAIR

This BMW E23 was up for sale
at Silverstone Auctions. Would
you have one over a Merc?

assures me is for Sport – though in reality I
believe it would be more accurately
described as the suicide setting! I bought the
XKR as a replacement for a Porsche 996
C4S which I enjoyed very much for seven
years, however I decided it was time for a
change and the XKR certainly ticked the
performance box.
It’s not perfect (the electronics are by
Lucas) but given the heavy depreciation
from new, buying one isn’t in the realms of
fantasy for mere mortals.
As a consequence I believe the
supercharged Jaguar XKR deserves a
mention in your hall of fame.

It doesn’t take a lot of persuasion to get
us behind the wheel of a Supercharged Jag.
