otherwiseclassylookingtruck.Becausethedieselparticulateemissionssystemswill
runextremelyhot—andtheventedtipis a necessity—thereareaftermarketanswersto
maintainfunctionalitywitha littlebetterstyle.TheventedtipwasdevelopedbytheOEMengineerstoreducetheexhaustgas
temperaturetoasclosetooutsideambientairtemperatureaspossiblebeforeit exitedthe
system.Becauseit’scommontosee500+degreesaftertheDieselParticulatefilter,getting
thosetempsdownquicklyis keytopreventinjury,burn,orevencreateda grassfirefrom
theheatresonatingfromthesystem.Aftercuttingthefactorytailpipesectionoff,thethreerubberhangersarepriedoffandthesectionis slippedup
overtheaxleandslidoutoftheway.SittingnexttothenewstainlesssteelMBRPsystem,youcanseehowlittle
thereis tothisinstall.Plus,youjustknowthatdual-exittipis goingtolookgreathangingundertherearfender.offeredpowerandtorquewhilemaintaininggreatmileage
andquiet,smooth-runningengines.In2004,theyreleasedthefirstfullproductionrunof
emissions-equippedDuramax,theLLY,whichhaditsown
EGRsystem.ThencametheLBZplatformin2006,which
tookwhattheylearnedaboutemissionsequipmentandthe
platformitselfandimprovedonit ineveryway.Somestill
considertheLBZtoenginetobethebestoftheDuramax
tothisday.Late 2007 broughta neweraindiesel,with
everstricteremissionsrequirementsleadingtotheintro-
ductionoftheDieselParticulateFiltrationexhaustsystems
andtheLMM.WhiletheLMMengineitselfwasverysimilar
totheLBZ,it wasstrappeddownwithanevenlargerEGR
systemandtheallnewDPFsystem,whichwouldtrapsoot
andburnit offinthefiltereverycouplehundredmiles.The
LMMhaditsproblems(mostofwhichrevolvedaroundthat
emissionsequipment),soin 2011 GMreleasedanallnew
platformcalledtheLML,whichcamewiththeintroduc-
tionofUreainjectiontotheexhaustsystemtohelpfurther
reduceemissions.TheLMLwasuseduntil 2016 withmuch
success,thoughsomeownersexperiencedCP4injection
pumpissuesandUreasystemproblems.So,in2017,whenthenewsgotoutthatGMwasreleasing
a completely,from-the-ground-up,brand-newDuramax
engine,themarketwasecstatic.DubbedtheL5P,thePEPITUP
MBRPoffersthisfilter-back,stainless-steelexhaustsystemforthe
L5PDuramaxthatwillreplacethatfactorytrumpettailpipewitha
unique,dual-exit,single-sidetip,allowingforanaggressivelookstaring
downthebarreloftwo,5-inchpolishedtips.Installationofthefilter-backkitsis rathersimplebutwillrequireremovingthefactorysensorsfromthe
tailpipesectiontobereinstalledinthenewMBRPsystem.Onthe2017+GMtruck,thefactoryexhaustwill
needtobecutjustbehindthefilterwherethenewkitwillslipoverandclampintoplace.
