illustrator?
Stan Chow, Phil Galloway, Dave Merrell,
plus many, many others.
What’s the best piece of commercial
work you’ve done?
A few years ago, I worked on a couple
of projects for Liverpool and the Premier
League. Both were aimed at children
and families, and I used the rules of
football to help teach life lessons and
develop social awareness. The material
we created was packed with loads of
football illustrations, although having to
draw a comic strip of Liverpool’s 2005
Champions League Final win was a bit
of a struggle, being a United supporter...

Who do you support?
Arsenal.
What’s the best piece of commercial
work you’ve done?
I did some work for the launch of the
new Adidas Predator boot a while back,
including several portraits of players and
illustrations of Preds through the years.
They plastered a whole Adidas shop in
my work, and Frank Lampard was later
interviewed sitting in front of a massive
illustration I’d drawn of him. Definitely
a career highlight.

Who do you support?
Crystal Palace.
How did you first get into football
illustration?
Both of the main styles I do (ground
illustrations and Subbuteo-style teams)
came about when I couldn’t find the
right gifts for my friends and family, so
decided to produce something myself.
What’s the best piece of commercial
work you’ve produced?
Arsenal used my 2002 Double winners
Subbuteo team design on some of their
official merchandise. The socks are ace!

Who do you support?
Celtic, but I’m a part-time Napoli fan
due to a loose connection in my youth.
Who’s your favourite player?
Of all time, Gabriel Batistuta. For Celtic,
it has to be Henrik Larsson.
What’s your favourite football
illustration from your own work?
My favourite has to be the Scottish FA
promo poster for England vs Scotland
at this summer’s Women’s World Cup.
I did one for each of the group games,
but just loved that one because it was
their first game and England-Scotland
was such a massive tie. Up until then,
I’d never been able to properly support
Scotland at a major tournament, as
they’d never qualified. I can remember
France 98, but didn’t really appreciate it
the same way I would now, of course.
It was incredible to create something
for an occasion like that.
What’s the best piece of commercial
work you’ve done?
Earlier this year, I produced a series of
illustrations which featured in a video
for a BBC Sportscene episode, covering
the Scottish Cup final between Celtic
and Hearts. That was a bit of a crazy
moment. It was the first time I’d ever
had anything I’ve done on TV, and for it
to be on a programme I’ve watched for
as long as I can remember felt surreal.
