Rivers of meltwater carve into the Greenland ice sheet
near the Sermeq Avangnardleg glacier in this view from
a plane on Aug. 4. July was the hottest month since record
keeping began 139 years ago, one more entry in the
ledger marked “Climate Crisis.” Still another came on
Aug. 1, when the largest one-day loss by volume of the
Greenland ice sheet was recorded—12.5 billion tons
of ice melted in the course of 24 hours.
