As a
high school
student, I can
appreciate the
importance
of literacy
around the
world. I
wanted to do
something to
bring attention
to reading, so two years
ago I started Marks for Life.
I make bookmarks and
distribute them to various
places like preschools, libraries,
and, one of my favorites, a
special reading program in
Brazil that teaches individuals
from preschool to adulthood.

Our youth group at
Bethany United Methodist
church in Lexington, NC,
throws an annual Acts of
Kindness party at the end
of the year when each
member thinks of one idea
to do for the community.
Some things we’ve done:
pay for someone’s meal
at a restaurant, take coffee
to attendants working at
a nonprofit, donate socks
to the homeless shelter,
and bring muffins to the
police station.
HOLLY CAMERON, Lexington, NC
For Teacher Appreciation Week
last year, I wanted to gather donations for
our local animal shelter, which was flooded
during Hurricane Irma. I sent a note to the
parents of my second graders at Paterson
Elementary School asking for pet food,
treats, toys, towels, and blankets. Then the
students and I made a chart to keep track
of all the items that came in. They were
excited about helping the shelter and also
about our aim to have a movie party and
no homework if we collected multiples
of everything, which we did. I’m looking
forward to making this a regular event!
