AUSTRALIAN HOUSE &GARDEN| 159

THE BRIEF
When they came to renovate
their kitchen, the ownersof this
Melbourne home had one
ingredient they wanted to include:
anexisting black timber and glass
display cabinet. they called on
kitchen companylet’s talk kitchens
to integrate it in a contemporary
scheme,and to devisea more
functional layout for the generously
sized4.7x3.8m room with garden
views at the rear of their home.

a2.4x1.3m walk-in pantry
housing food storage and
small appliances.

THE DESIGN APPROACH
taking their cues from the existing black cabinet, the designers
devised a monochromaticpalette including black timber-
grained cabinets (polytec Black Wenge) and a charcoal-toned
tiledsplashback. a previously under-utilisedcorner has been
turned into a walk-inpantry containing small appliances and
abundant storage.Glorious bench space stretches around the
perimeter while, in the centre, there’s room for a 150x90cm
island, perfect for food prep and socialising. the island
benchtop,in solid blond timber, offsets the dark tones and adds
visual warmth. all other benchtops arecorian Raincloud.#
