FABRIC PLANNING


For the blocks in the featured quilt,
designer Wendy Sheppard selected
12 different batiks:^3 ⁄ 8 yard each of
red, light gray, dark gray, light green,
green, aqua, purple, dark orange, blue,
and brown;^1 ⁄ 2 yard orange; and^1 ⁄ 4 yard
dark green. You can use a similar
approach or choose smaller pieces of
assorted batiks from your stash to total
41 ⁄ 2 yards.
Each A and B block requires two
matching batik 4^1 ⁄ 4 " squares; each
C block requires two 4^1 ⁄ 4 " squares and
one 3^1 ⁄ 2 " square from the same batik.
If you want to replicate the block
colors of the featured quilt, refer to
the following list as you cut your
assorted batiks.

Block A
* 14 green
* 6 orange
* 5 each blue and red
* 4 each brown and gray
* 3 purple
Block B
* 1 each aqua, brown, orange
* 2 each blue and purple
* 3 each gray and red
* 4 green
Block C
* 5 gray
* 6 aqua
* 8 orange

CUT FABRICS
Cut pieces in the following order.

From assorted batiks, cut:
▫ 116—4^1 ⁄ 4 " squares (58 matched
pairs)
From remaining assorted batiks, cut
19 matching sets of:
▫ 2—4^1 ⁄ 4 " squares
▫ 1—3^1 ⁄ 2 " square

From solid black, cut:
▫ 8—5× 91 ⁄ 2 " sashing rectangles
▫ 137—4^1 ⁄ 4 " squares
▫ 349—3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
▫ 34—2^1 ⁄ 4 " squares
▫ 17—1^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
From solid white, cut:
▫ 17—4^1 ⁄ 4 " squares
▫ 34—2^1 ⁄ 4 " squares
▫ 68—1^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
From gray-and-black batik, cut:
▫ 9—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" binding strips

ASSEMBLE A BLOCKS
Measurements include^1 ⁄ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no direction
is specified, press seam toward darker
fabric.

For one A block, gather a pair of
matching batik 4^1 ⁄ 4 " squares, two
solid black 4^1 ⁄ 4 " squares, and five solid
black 3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares.

Use a pencil to mark a diagonal
line on wrong side of each
assorted batik 4^1 ⁄ 4 " square.

Layer a marked batik square
atop a solid black 4^1 ⁄ 4 " square.
Sew together with two seams,
stitching^1 ⁄ 4 " on each side of drawn
line (Diagram 1). Cut pair apart on
drawn line. Press open to make two
triangle-squares. Each triangle-square
should be 3^7 ⁄ 8 " square including seam
allowances. Repeat to make four
triangle-squares total.

FINISHED QUILT: 81 1 ⁄ 2 " square
FINISHED BLOCK: 9" square

based on 42" of usable fabric width.
