ALISON RICE
At its core, Offline, the Podcast is an exploration
of true self through raw, honest conversations
facilitated by Alison Rice. With a background
in the fast-paced digital world, Rice speaks to
her guests from a very real place. Discussing
a myriad of topics from meditation, family,
fear, relationships, career and health, her main focus is to understand
the “self”. Most of her guests have a strong online presence or social
following. Rice offers them a moment to step outside of the rigid labels
placed on them, to get “offline” and truly be themselves. She treats each
guest with genuine affection and real emotion. When there’s laughter, it’s
raucous. When there are tears, they flow. Rice’s emotions run deep as she
allows herself to vulnerable and heard. SF

The Montessori Toddler
SIMONE DAVIES, HARDIE GRANT
The uniqueness of the Montessori method, developed by Maria
Montessori more than a century ago, is that it’s a child-centred
mode of education. Instead of the teacher handing down lessons
and judgements from above, the object here is to engage children
— in this case, toddlers — by appealing to their natural curiosity and
creativity to work through childhood challenges such as discipline,
toilet training, sibling rivalry and tantrums. The Australian-born
author, who runs Montessori classes in Amsterdam, presents
a “new picture of the toddler” as an engaged, forgiving and adept
young human who thrives on independent problem solving, far from
the familiar image of the “terrible twos”. With a little help from
engaged parents, the Montessori toddler will grow up imbued with
the qualities of self-reliance and self-discipline that make for
a happy, productive and focused adulthood. CS
Beneath the Skin
VARIOUS, WELLCOME COLLECTION
Naomi Alderman says, “We think of ourselves as a single, unitary,
contained within this envelop of flesh; everything inside the outline
of ours skin is ‘us’. And yet ...” Each body has a different story to
tell, so who better to tell them than some of the world’s finest
writers? Beneath the Skin shares 15 different pieces originally
commissioned, performed and broadcast part of the BBC Radio
3 series A Body of Essays, which was produced by Kate Bland.
Each writer explores a different body part: intestines, womb, nose,
brain, lungs and many more. Beneath the Skin, often comical
and unexpected, is a unique and mysterious voyage through the
fascinating landscapes of the body. KD
