well ness work
A
friend of mine shared some wise words with me after I felt
I’d let her down by not attending her yoga class ... again. I’d
been trying to get there for a few weeks but something always
seemed to come up: a deadline, a surprise visit from a friend,
last-minute dinner plans.
Ready to go and craving a juicy yoga flow, I was suddenly struck with
a horrible headache. Just the thought of getting upside-down — even for
a downward dog — made my head pound harder. I texted an apology and
went to bed, feeling like a bad friend and an even worse yogi. A few hours
later, I woke up to a message from her sharing this quote from Dr Seuss:
“Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”
Those words have stayed with me ever since.
Those who truly love you understand you. They see you in the exact same
way they see themselves. They strive for the same qualities of compassion,
empathy and love that you do and, because of that, they see you doing the
same. They know stress, worry and chaos and they deeply understand when
these manifest in you. They meet you, always, where you are.
Surround yourself with the people who are striving to know themselves
intimately. Find those who don’t shy away from their darkness and those
who embody their light. In your journey to getting to know yourself, it’s
these people who will help you the most.
Who are these people? Perhaps they’re your partner, brother, sister,
mother, father, best friend, mentor, barista or even your bus driver.
Tell us who they are for you. Even better, show us. Share your stories
and photos with the WellBeing community via Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter, email or snail mail. We’d love to know — and print — our
favourite stories in Your Say on page 12.
Have you looked within yourself? Can you sit in stillness? Do you
embrace your darkness? It’s only when you’re connected to your own
core that you can truly connect to others. It’s here that we’re all trying
to linger a little longer.
Spring brings with it a magnificent chance to renew. Dive deeply into
yourself and your passions and ride the effervescent season of spring. Enjoy
this time of reawakening and redefining who you wish to be, guided by the
words you read here in WellBeing. We can’t wait to hear what you find.
