CRITICS’ CHOICE
THE LIKEABLE
comedian Katherine
Ryan was born in
Canada, and now lives
in London with her
daughter, Violet. The
child sees herself as
superior to her mum by
virtue of her English
accent, and Ryan
(pictured) is on a quest to
find some British ancestry
that will ‘put my daughter
in her place’. Her mother’s
side is the most likely source,
and the journey makes a
promising start as she visits
a stunning library in Canada
to read the poetry of three-
times great-grandfather,
James Arminius Richey —
an intriguing fellow, but
sadly not British. Undaunted,
Ryan digs deeper and deeper
— and is rewarded with an
unexpected revelation...
PICK OF THE DAY
CAPTIVE AUDIENCE
Big Week At The
Zoo, 8pm, Ch5
THE start of a new,
week-long stint at
Yorkshire Wildlife
Park. Episode one
features the sweet
sight of a trio of
month-old tiger
cubs; at the other
end of the cuteness
spectrum, a pair of
Chinese alligators
are attempting to breed. Somewhere in
the middle is ex-JLS star J.B. Gill, (pictured)
who is trying to determine the sex of a sloth.
MOVING DOCUMENTARY
The Day Mountbatten Died, 9pm, BBC2
FORTY years ago, Lord Mountbatten, the
last Viceroy of India, was murdered by
the IRA when his boat was blown up off
the coast of Ireland. His grandson Nicholas
and 15-year-old local boy Paul Maxwell
were also killed. This powerful film relives
that day through the moving testimony
of those it affected, and remembers a
man whose memory was honoured by
the naming of Prince Louis in 2018.
ON THE BEAT
Call The Cops, 9pm, Ch4
YET another observational programme
about police at work, this new series takes
us inside the command and control unit of
Devon and Cornwall Police. As crime rates
rise and officer numbers fall, ‘force control’
must make some very tough decisions...
NEW COMEDY
Stath Lets Flats, 10pm, Ch4
ESTATE agents aren’t normally underdogs
on TV, which is part of what makes
the idiotic and eager-to-please Stath
(Fleabag’s Jamie Demetriou) so endearing
to watch. At the start of a new run of the
Bafta-nominated London-set comedy, the
gormless Greek-Cypriot agent is appalled
at the ‘sexy’ new direction being taken
at the agency in his dad’s absence.
