AS if there was any doubt. Ben
Stokes loves playing cricket at
Lord’s.
The World Cup final hero had
already spilled enough sweat,
tears and champagne on this
hallowed turf for one summer,
but he added a bit more for
good measure with a second
Ashes ton that made an even
bigger statement than his first.
Back in 2013 Stokes’ 120 in
Perth in just his second Test
signalled his arrival as a player
on the biggest stage, but there
was very little he could do to
save England from their 5-0
steamrollering.
This time his 115 not out
shifted the momentum, not
only at Lord’s but potentially
also for the series in which an
in-form Stokes (above) at No.5
gives the entire batting line-up
more stability.
When man of the match
Stokes arrived at the crease

late on day four, Australia were
on top with England’s fragile
batting order teetering on the
edge of oblivion once more.
It needed an innings of
substance and of calm
authority. The sort that an

experienced and high-quality
middle order batsman should
be able to produce.
And for the first time since
his return to the Test side last
year, that is exactly what
Stokes provided as the

pressure was applied by
Australia’s top-notch bowling
attack. “It is nice to get a
hundred,” said Stokes.
“We fought incredibly hard
to get the win and it was an
amazing game to be a part of.
“We threw everything we
had at them and fair play to
Australia for holding out.
“This is why it is the best
form of cricket to play.
“You go through the ups and
downs over five days
emotionally. It is pinnacle of
any cricketer’s ambitions.”
It took Stokes 104 balls to
reach his fifty and then he
blitzed 65 from his next 59
balls as if it were a one-day
game after all.
His loud and raw celebration
revealed just how much
another etching on the
honours board here meant to
him, and by the close of play it
had almost been a part of a
famous win, but not this time.
