Manga goes to Hollywood

James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez show other 4K BD titles how it should be done. Mostly

Filmmaking genius James Cameron sat on the rights
to – and a script for – a fi lm adaptation of Manga hit
Gunnm (AKA Battle Angel Alita) for nearly 15 years
before deciding to hand the project to director Robert
Rodriguez. The belated big-budget result, Alita: Battle
Angel, is a fascinating, beautiful, yet also fl awed
fi lm with the potential for sequels galore.
Alita... tells the tale of a young cyborg (Rosa
Salazar) salvaged from a futuristic junkyard by
robot-repair genius Ido (Christoph Waltz), who's
looking to replace his murdered daughter. But as
Alita rediscovers her forgotten past, it turns out
there’s much more to this discarded cyborg than
anyone could have expected.
Cameron’s script mines the richly imaginative
Manga source material for plenty of coming-of-age
emotion, brutal action and jaw-dropping spectacle,
aided and abetted by supreme eff ects work,
well-directed set-pieces and a fantastic CGI-
augmented performance by Salazar.
