POETS & WRITERS MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES state, national, and international prizes in poetry, fiction, and creative
nonfiction. We list only prizes of $1,000 or more, prizes of less than $1,000 that charge no entry fee, and prestigious nonmonetary
awards. Applications and submissions for the following prizes are due shortly. Before submitting a manuscript, first contact the sponsoring
organization for complete guidelines. When requesting information by mail, enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE). See

Academy of American Poets
WALT WHITMAN AWARD
A prize of $5,000, publication by Gray-
wolf Press, and a six-week residency at
the Civitella Ranieri Center in Umbria,
Italy, is given annually for a poetry col-
lection by a poet who has not published
a book of poems in a standard edition.
The winning book will also be distrib-
uted to 5,000 members of the Academy
of American Poets. Harryette Mullen
will judge. Using only the online
submission system, submit a manuscript
of 48 to 100 pages with a $35 entry fee

Alice James Books
ALICE JAMES AWARD
A prize of $2,000 and publication by
Alice James Books is given annually for
a poetry collection by a poet residing in
the United States. Submit a manuscript
of 48 to 100 pages with a $30 entry fee
by November 4. All entries are consid-

American Academy in Berlin
BERLIN PRIZE FELLOWSHIPS
Residential fellowships are given an-
nually to fiction writers and creative
nonfiction writers to spend an academic
semester in residence at the Hans Arn-
hold Center at the American Academy
in Berlin. Fellows receive a $5,000
monthly stipend, lodging, partial board,
and round-trip airfare. Writers based in
the United States who have published
at least one book of fiction or nonfic-
tion are eligible. Submit two writing
samples totaling no more than 60 pages,
a project proposal that includes an
excerpt from the proposed project, and
a curriculum vitae by September 23;
submit three letters of recommendation
(sent directly to the Academy by the
references) by September 30. There is
no application fee. Visit the website for

American Literary Review
LITERARY AWARDS
Three prizes of $1,000 each and pub-
lication in American Literary Review are
given annually for a poem, a short story,
and an essay. Using only the online
submission system, submit up to three
poems, a story of up to 8,000 words, or
an essay of up to 6,500 words with a $15

HONICKMAN FIRST BOOK PRIZE
A prize of $3,000 and publication by
American Poetry Review is given annu-
ally for a first poetry collection. The
winning book is distributed by Copper
Canyon Press through Consortium.

Scholarship
An award of approximately $60,500 is
given annually to a U.S. poet for a year
of travel and study outside of North
America. Submit two copies of up to 40
pages of poetry or a published book and
up to 20 pages of poetry by October 15.

A Public Space
A PUBLIC SPACE FELLOWSHIPS
Three six-month fellowships of $1,000
each are given annually to emerging fic-
tion writers and nonfiction writers who
have not published a full-length book.
The fellows will work with the edi-
tors to prepare a piece for publication
in A Public Space and will also have the
opportunity to meet with publishing
