(Wang) #1
Sabrina couldn’t help but stare at his
perfect smile—it had been some time since
a man had directed one her way. “Perfect
description of today. Wet stairway got me,”
she added, holding up her bluish swollen
hand with a grimace. “What about you?”
“Over-30 soccer league,” he said, rue-
fully. “Funny...I thought I was still a teen-
ager. Apparently, I’m not. It’s definitely
fractured,” he gritted his teeth and tried to
lift his right arm. “Good thing I’m a lefty.”
Sabrina laughed, pointing down. “Same
here. I got my left hand, but luckily, I’m
a righty.”
“See? There’s always a silver lining.” He
crossed to sit next to her. “I’m Ray Russell,
wounded forward and very grateful only
my arm was injured.”

They shook hands awkwardly. He’s cute,
Sabrina thought. He was scruffy in his gray
sweats and sneakers, but his sincere brown
eyes and dimples more than made up for it.
“And you are...” Ray asked timidly.
“Sabrina Doyle?” an X-ray technician
called from the doorway.
“That’s me,” she said to Ray. “Nice to
meet you...good luck with that arm.”
“You too, Sabrina Doyle,” he answered,
following her with his eyes in a way that
made Sabrina’s pulse quicken.
Sabrina’s X-ray showed no fractures.
“Silver lining,” she smiled to herself, head-
ing to the pharmacy one floor down, when
she spotted Ray heading her way.
“Well, Mr. Russell, we meet again!”
“Sabrina!” he crowed. “So what’s your
prognosis?” he asked, genuinely concerned.
“Sprained, but luckily no breaks. My
black cloud is fading,” she said. “And you?”
“Good news too. A hairline fracture,
six weeks to heal, 21st-century cast,” Ray
showed it off like a new toy. “I can move
my fingers and take a shower. Soccer
league, however, is out. R&R for the rest
of the day.” He met her eye with a hope-
ful look. “Hey...are you hungry? There’s
a breakfast place a few doors down...”
“Starving,” Sabrina replied, her heart
trilling as she smiled. “Let’s do it.”
“Great,” Ray beamed. “Sunrise Café.
I’ll meet you there in 10 minutes.”
“It’s a date,” Sabrina confirmed.
“Great—I’ll see you there,” Ray said,
waving his cast. “If you’re lucky, you can be
the first to sign it.”
Sabrina stepped outside the clinic into
the warm sun, smiling at the blue sky
above. No sign of a black cloud, Sabrina
thought gleefully. But there’s a 90% chance
of romance! —Christine Hauray-Gilbert

Dorothy was the

killer. Kat told

everyone that

Tony had died,

but she never told

them how he was

murdered. Only

the person who

murdered him

would have known

he was stabbed with a pencil. After some

pressing, Dorothy admitted that after Tony

had refused to back down, and threatened to

take her to court over her unpaid dues, the

two had a scuffle and she stabbed him in the

neck with the pencil he had been using. She

was arrested and taken to prison.
