Often, talking to TV lovers, I hear about how
lost they get while looking to find something
good. They sit in front of the TV and wind up
spending too much time looking, looking, look-
ing.
And most often, the central issue is Netflix,
which is so over-stocked with material that you
ultimately get overwhelmed while looking for a
show to watch. Every week, a few new series
sneak onto the streaming service, then quickly
sink down into its quicksand-like coffers. They
become mere “content,” just more titles
crammed under the Netflix logo.
When I make my way through Netflix, I feel
as though I’m picking through the bins at
Filene’s Basement, an endless process that
doesn’t always end in success.
Some of the services and cable channels are
a little less overwhelming, and a lot more selec-
tive than Netflix in what they choose to offer.
Hulu and Amazon, for example, are a little easi-
er to negotiate, although, as time goes on, they,
too, are getting chaotic.

Right now, for instance, Amazon is begin- ning to dip into stand-up specials — a genre for- merly dominated by Netflix — with last week’s “Quality Time” from Jim Gaffigan and this Fri- day’s “My Mama Is a Human and So Am I” from Alice Wetterlund. (Also coming to Amazon in the near future: a stand-up a special from “Broad City” star Ilana Glazer.) Before long, the Amazon lineup is probably going to seem as bottomless as Netflix’s. How to cope with overload? Here’s some very complicated advice: KEEP A LIST. Yup, that’s how I do it: an old-fashioned, low-tech handwritten list. It’s the antidote to endless shopping. Here are the instructions:

1.If you see an ad, or a feature, or a review of a show you think you want to watch, add the ti- tle to the list. 2.Keep the list near your TV. 3.If you like, you can put the list in your phone for easy access. 4.Use the list.

Q.This woman I’ve been friends with for quite a while asked me to be her plus-one to a friend’s wedding when her boyfriend had to cancel last minute. The wedding and reception went really well, nothing romantic or scandalous happened between us. This friend confided in me that she brought me because she “needed someone fun, someone who can handle an open bar and who will get along with my friends.” At the end of the night, we went our separate ways. Thing is, two weeks later I discover through the grapevine that her boyfriend broke up with her. Before all of this, I used to have a big crush on her, and now that I see a window open- ing, I want to go for it. I haven’t seen her since the wedding (it’s been a little over five weeks now), as we’ve both been busy and on separate vacations. I haven’t gotten a good chance to talk with her in person to see how she’s feeling, both about the breakup and, potentially, me. I was thinking of getting together with her casually when she gets back into town, all the while pretending I don’t know about her breakup so that I could see if she takes the conversation in that direction. My question is how does one transition from this platonic position to a more romantic/serious one? She’s really incredible all around so I really want to get this right. I feel like I already have a huge advantage with her but how do I go about handling this somewhat delicate situation? THE DATE

A.The best path is the honest one. It’s the one that involves shooting your shot. Ask her to join you for a meal, and then, dur- ing said meal, let her know you had a great time at that wedding. Tell her you’d choose her for that kind of company, too — that if you had to go to a formal gathering with friends and cheese plates, she’d be your ideal plus-one. (It’s always nice to hear that kind of thing.) Also let her know you heard about the breakup (I don’t see a reason to lie about having that information). Then ask her how she’s doing. If she says the news is true and that she’s OK, go ahead and explain that you’d like to take her out on a date. Nothing huge, no big promises. All you’re hoping for is more time together — with potential. Make it clear that if it’s not something she wants, you’ll understand. It might be too soon for her to pursue any of this, but please let her know the stakes are low. You were psyched to be asked to that wedding,

and it had everything to do with her. You’d like more time to figure out what that means. MEREDITH

Don’t force it or make your move too soon. She may need time to get her head straight. It’s generally not a good thing to just jump right into another relationship, so be patient and respect- ful.
