Baseball

Some long odds

and familiar feelings

Just 36 games remainin the regular
seasonfor the Red Sox, and in some
sensewe’re still figuringout exactly
what they are.
After RafaelDevers’s “Jump on my
back,boys”performancein a comeback
froma 6-0 hole against the OriolesSun-
day, they have won five in a row, and
per baseball-reference.com,theirodds
of reaching the playoffs have increased
to... well,just 2.8 percent. But that’s
morethan doubletheiroddsa week
ago. It’s not exactly hope,but it’s some-
thing.
Overon the bummerside of the led-
ger, they fell behind,6-0, to the Orioles,
whichno teamshoulddo unlessit is
trying to get relegated to the Pacific
Coast League. And Chris Sale is getting
his sore left elbow checked out by Dr.
James Andrews, with a determination
of its condition hoveringover not just
this season,but next.
(A few days ago, someoneasked on
Twitter what wordor phrase you’d
eliminate fromsports if you could. My
initialanswerwas “Talk about.. .,’’
whichis such a la-
zy way for a re-
porter to ask a
question that it’s
not even a ques-
tion. But perhaps
the choiceshould
be the ever-omi-
nous“he will visit
with Dr. An-
drews.”)
Whilethe Red
Sox’ final standing
is still to be deter-
mined,we can alreadydeducewhat
they are not. These are not the insubor-
dinate and unprofessional 2011Red
Sox who buriedthemselves in a heapof
beer cans and chicken bonesin an epic
Septembercollapse.
They are not the 2014Red Sox, a
collection of veterans who,so inspira-
tionalin unisonthe championshipsea-
son before, becameso surlyin their
struggles that, as colleagueAlex Speier
details in his revelatory new book,it
madeMookie Betts’s first taste of the
big leaguesan unpleasantone.
They are not the 2001Red Sox, who
had Manny Ramirez,Pedro Martinez,
about20 agingplayers who thought
they wereas good as they oncewere
(they weren’t), and a smug, dipstick in-
terimmanager in Joe Kerriganwho
thoughthe knew better than both of
them.
This year’s Red Sox may be frustrat-
ing and disappointing on the field, but
they are not unlikableas a whole, like
someof thoseaforementionedfailures
of roster construction and ego manage-
ment. It’s essentiallythe samecore of
players that led the Red Sox to the most
drama-freechampionshipthey’ll ever
have less than a full year ago. Do not
mistake a lack of resultsfor effort; we
alreadyknowtheseguys care.Some-
timeswe forget how hardbaseball can
be.
Whilethis Red Sox teamis still
scriptingits final act, there are ele-
mentsto it that do remindme of some
teamsand seasonsfromthe franchise’s
past — just not those miserable afore-
mentionedones.This is not that bad,
and there’s still that slim chance(2.8
percent!)that it gets muchbetter, espe-
ciallyif they continue to navigate this
stretch of mediocreto lousyopponents
as they should.
A few teamsof the past that share
somecharacteristics, traits and plot
twists with this one:

R2006:The obviousconnection is
that each teamsuffereda brutalAugust
sweepby the Yankees that felt like the
death knell at the time.It was in ’06;
the Yankees pummeledthe Sox in a
five-gameset fromAugust 18-21,and
the Sox eventually finished11 games
back.
These Red Sox lost four straight in
New York Aug. 2-4, but they have gone
8-4 since,so rightnow that seriesstill
foreshadowsonly a finishshy of the
playoffs. That ’06 teamenduredmany
moreseriousconcernsthan this team:
Jon Lester was diagnosedwith cancer
in August, David Ortiz missedtime
with a heart issue, and therewerefar
moreinjuriesoverall.
The most vividcomparison to me is
both teams’unexpected relianceon
pitchers that never weresupposed to
have a role. The Andrew Cashner/Ryan
Weber/BrianJohnsonrolesin ’06 were
played by the likes of Jason Johnson,
Kevin Jarvis, and KasonGabbard.
R1977:The currentSox have a ter-
rific lineupled by Devers, Betts, Xander
Bogaerts, and J.D. Martinez, one that is
secondin the majorsin runs.The pitch-
ing? Uh, well, that’s why they are where
they are, isn’t it?
The ’77 Sox had
a similar construc-
tion, thoughthey
werea morecom-
plete team,win-
ning 97 gamesand
finishing2½
gamesbackof the
Yankees. Their
lineup,whichhad
five players with at
least 26 homers
(Jim Rice led the
way with 39) and eightwith 14 or
more,was ferocious.
But Don Zimmernever knew much
moreaboutpitchingbeyondthat he
couldn’t hit it in his playing days, and
the Red Sox’ leadingwinnerwas reliev-
er Bill Campbell,with 13 victories.
Also of note:Bothhad mashing
youngthirdbasemen.Pretty sure De-
vers is going to have a longer run than
ButchHobson(30 homers,112 RBIs in
’77), a favoriteat this address.He’s al-
readyprovidedthreetimesmoreWAR
this year (5.2)than Hobsondid in his
Red Sox career(1.7).
R2002:This teamwas frustrating
and immenselylikable at once.It fea-
turedanincredibleamountofhigh-end
talent: Pedro, Manny, Nomar, free-
agent signeeJohnny Damon,late-sea-
son pickupCliff Floyd,20-gamewinner
and teamWAR leaderDerekLowe.
But general manager Dan Duquette,
just as Dave Dombrowskidid with this
year’s Sox, left some unfilledvoidson
the roster that ultimately hauntedthem
in the end.
They won 93 gamesdespiteFrank
Castillo going 6-15 with a 5.07 ERA in
23 starts and Tony Clark hitting 3 hom-
ers with a .556 OPS in 90 gamesas the
first basemanbefore Floydarrived.
This teammissedthe playoffs, but
after the misery of the ’01 Kerrigan/
Mike Lansing/Dante Bichette crew, it
was a breath of freshair, with Damon,
CarlosBaerga,and 43-year-old Rickey
Hendersonbringing charisma and ca-
maraderieto the roster.
There wouldbe heartbreakto come
in ’03, but beautifuldays beyondthat,
and ’02 set the stage. There are more
good thingsto comefor this current
core of Red Sox too, even if they don’t
comearoundthis season.
