Brokers’ gloom

and ex-dividend

switch accounts

for RBS plunge

STRUGGLING lender Royal
Bank of Scotland was the
FTSE 100’s biggest faller
yesterday, after being
caught in a double-whammy
by its shares going ex-
dividend and a clutch of
pessimistic brokers’ notes.
The lender, in which the
UK Government is a
majority shareholder, faced
a downgrade from HSBC
and Macquarie, where
analysts cut their
expectations for the bank.
UBS and Goldman Sachs
both reduced their target
price for the stock. That
drop was compounded by
the share going ex-dividend,
meaning it traded at a
discount throughout the
day. RBS closed down 20.8p
at 177.65p.
When a share is ex-
dividend, an investor who
buys it will not be entitled to
the next dividend payout,
meaning it sells at a
proportionate discount.
Royal Dutch Shell,
which is listed twice
because of its governance
structure, also went
ex-dividend yesterday,
single-handedly taking
more than 22 points off the
blue-chip index.
The drag from the oil
major raised the pressure on
the blue-chip index, which
closed down 1.13pc, falling
by 80.87 points to 7,067.01,
its lowest closing price since
February. Only 13 stocks
managed to eke out gains,
with the biggest riser

  • United Utilities – rising
    15p to 789.2p as utility
    companies outperformed, a
    common sign of investors
    trying to avoid riskier
    shares.
    The FTSE performed well
    below most of Europe’s
    bourses, with the notable
    exception of Italy, which
    plummeted a further 2.5pc
    as its political turmoil
    continued.
    It was a tumultuous day
    across global markets. Hong
    Kong’s Hang Seng index
    managed to hold gains for

the first time in days despite
widespread losses in the
Asia-Pacific region.
Australian shares had their
sharpest drop in 18 months.
European markets
opened flat, but were
quickly sent into a second
day of drops after China
issued a fresh warning of
“countermeasures” if the US
proceeds with new tariffs.
Despite several further
swings in both direction,
they closed in the red across
the board.
With the FTSE 100 swept
up by global movements,
the FTSE 250 managed to
outperform the blue-chip
index, falling 0.48pc.
Spread-betting platform
Plus500, one of the mid-cap
index’s more volatile
constituents, fought its way
to the top, rising 63.4p to
724p after Asaf Elimelaech,
its chief executive and Elad
Even-Chen, the chief
financial officer, both
bought just over 30,000
shares apiece, while Alon
Gonen, the co-founder,
bought just under a million.
Ben Williams, Liberum
analyst, said the insider
buys, while not huge, were a
“key piece of investor
feedback” that showed “the
company is not sitting on
inside information”.
FirstGroup was the
second-largest FTSE 250
riser, after naming former
Arriva boss David Martin as
its new chairman.
At the other end of the
movers, KAZ Minerals
dropped sharply, falling
75.6p to 419.1p, after cutting
its dividend amid a
worsening outlook.
The copper miner is
heavily exposed to trade war
fears, with copper often a
bellwether for global
investor sentiment. In a
statement, the company said
the short-term outlook for
copper was “more cautious
due to continuing trade
pressures and China
slowdown concerns, but
long-term outlook remains
robust.”
The drop was pronounced
despite reassuring notes
from brokers, with Barclays
describing KAZ’s financials
as being fundamentally
solid despite global worries.

Coral bookmaker

upgrades outlook
GVC, the gambling giant
behind Ladbrokes and
Coral, brushed off a
crackdown in the UK by
upgrading its forecasts for
the rest of the year due to
buoyant online operations.
It cut the number of shops
it will shut from 1,000 to
900, after the reduction of
maximum stakes on
fixed-odds betting
terminals earlier this year.

BUSINESS BULLETIN

Higher prices lift

Gem Diamonds
Gem Diamonds delivered
a “pleasant surprise” to
investors by overcoming a
slump in the gemstone
market to report higher
prices. The small-cap firm,
which owns the Letšeng
diamond mine in Lesotho,
recovered three diamonds
greater than 100 carats in
the first half of the year,
achieving an average price
of $1,697 (£1,400) per carat.

Metro Bank tops

watchdog’s poll
Struggling Metro Bank
received a much-needed
boost as it topped the
competition watchdog’s
customer service survey.
The challenger bank shared
the top spot with First
Direct, the online-only
division of the HSBC group.
The survey asked account
holders how likely they
were to recommend their
bank to friends and family.

GE plunges on

alleged fraud
The whistleblower in the
Bernard Madoff Ponzi
scheme case has said that
an accounting fraud
“bigger than Enron and
WorldCom combined”
lurks in General Electric,
knocking its shares by a
10th. Harry Markopolos
released a 170-page report
alleging a $38bn (£31bn)
fraud in GE’s insurance and
oilfield services businesses.

Citigroup snaps

up Sirius stake
Citigroup Global Markets
has taken a 5pc stake in
struggling Yorkshire miner
Sirius Minerals. Last week
the FTSE 250 miner
alarmed investors by
pulling a $500m (£411m)
bond sale at the last
moment, blaming “market
conditions”. It threw its
ambitious plans to build a
giant fertiliser mine in
Yorkshire into doubt.

ECB website hit

by cyberattack
The European Central
Bank said yesterday that
hackers had managed to
attack one of its websites
and steal the contact
details of 481 subscribers
to its electronic newsletter.
The cyberattack occurred
when malware was
injected into the server
and is the second time in
five years that one of ECB’s
sites has been breached.
