STREAMING
GLOW

Back for its third season, Netflix’s
hit comedy drama follows the
female wrestlers as they take the
Las Vegas Strip by storm, only to
find themselves struggling with
their identities both in and
outside the ring. Starring Betty
Gilpin and Alison Brie (right) and
new girl Geena Davis.
From 9 August.

Sara’s success story began when she was 21 and studying
for a business degree. While on work experience with a
local craft company, she discovered a gap in the market for
a tool to create bespoke envelopes for handmade cards.
“The card-making industry was booming and I would
speak to lots of crafters who didn’t have envelopes to fit
their handmade cards. I thought: ‘There needs to be a tool
to fold envelopes in different sizes.’”
After working on a number of designs, Sara came up with
the Enveloper, a simple board that can be used to create
bespoke envelopes from sheets of A4 and A3 paper.
“I rang a shopping channel and pitched my idea in
October. They let me launch my Enveloper on their show
and we sold 8,000 overnight. By Christmas, I’d sold 30,000.”

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS
By the time Sara graduated with a first-class degree the
following summer, her business was generating sales of
more than £500,000. She credits her parents, who run their
own decorating store, for her entrepreneurial spirit.
“They instilled a fantastic work ethic in me. We would live
and breathe the business, and that’s all I ever knew.”
With Crafter’s Companion turning over tens of millions a
year, and with more than 150 staff globally, Sara is flying high,
especially after being awarded an MBE in 2016 for her
contribution to and achievements in the craft industry.
“When the letter came through I thought it was a
phoney. I rang the Palace to check that it was real.”
Still resident in the North East, Sara travelled to London
to receive her award with her husband Simon, whom she
married in 2007, and their son Oliver, now five. She was
37 weeks pregnant their second son.
“I waddled up to Prince William. He took one look at my
bump and said: ‘Wow, that looks like it’s coming soon.’”
It was. Charlie arrived just three days later.
Sara’s sons are already showing signs of having inherited
her artistic flair.
“My husband’s always taking them outside with a football
and I’m saying: ‘Come on kids, let’s do some crafts.’ There’s
nothing I love more than when they ask to do crafts at the
weekend. I’m so thrilled it’s not: ‘Can I get my iPad out?’”
And if her boys want to follow further in her footsteps,
Sara will be backing them all the way. “If you’ve got the
drive and determination to succeed, the sky is the limit.”

A heavily pregnant Sara (above) receives her MBE from the
Duke of Cambridge in 2016. Three days later, her son Charlie
was born: “I was showing the midwives pictures of me getting
my MBE. They couldn’t believe it.” This month sees Sara join
Dragons Touker Suleyman, Deborah Meaden, Tej Lalvani and
Peter Jones (below left, from left) on BBC2’s DragonsÕ Den
