HABITATS
Open and lightly wooded savanna, some more
densely wooded areas, as well as rugged hill
country.

BEHAVIOR
Lives in family groups, or clans, that
may number 3 – 15 but sometimes to 40
individuals. Each clan marks its territory with
urine, droppings deposited at latrine sites, and
with anal gland secretions. All clan members
will defend the territory against intrusions
by other hyenas. Most hunting takes place
during the night, but some daylight activity
does occur. Previously thought to be skulking
scavengers, they are known to be highly
efficient, co-ordinated pack hunters. They will
also drive lion, leopard and cheetahs from kills.

BREEDING
Mating season: Any time of year, with
possible peak in some areas
Gestation: 110 days
Number of young: 1 – 3, usually 2
Birth weight: 1.5 kg (3.3 lb)
Sexual maturity: Males 2 years; Females
3 years

FOOD
Although they will scavenge, raid rubbish
dumps and chase other predators from their
kills, they also hunt a wide range of game
species. Antelope make up much of their prey,
but plains zebra and buffalo are also targeted.
They will also turn to man-eating in some areas,
and which may develop into a serious problem.
