ERNADETTE Fox (Blanchett)

seemingly has it all: handsome

spouse Elgin (Crudup), sweet teenage

daughter Bee (Nelson) and a life in Seattle

that appears idyllic.

But beneath the surface, the reclusive

architect is at war with her nosy neighbor

(Kristen Wiig) and with herself — so

instead of heading to Antarctica with her

husband and daughter for a family trip,

Bernadette disappears, shocking everyone

around her.

Told from Bee’s perspective, the story

recounts her adventure to find her mother,

who has resolved to get back in touch with

her creative side — by any means necessary.

The movie’s based on Maria Semple’s

2012 bestselling novel of the same name,

which Blanchett devoured only recently,

when she read it for the film role. “I was

unprepared and, embarrassingly, I read

it on a plane. Weeping and laughing and

nearly peeing my pants in public,” the

actress recounts, “I couldn’t put it down.”
