It was in art school where he

began transforming trash into

treasure. “I actually started working

with found objects because they

were free. Then I got interested in

the fact that they carry with them

embedded histories and marks of

the times we live in, and it became

an absurd archaeological game

for me.”

Take for instance his series,

Walkers. Started in 2013, these

fantastical crawlers take shape

from fallen branches, discarded

metal pieces and even abandoned

furniture. Then, there’s also

the videos he makes, usually

highlighting important questions

that humanity would be better

off pondering. But Sahej doesn’t

just stop at these. He’s often seen

performing in his exhibits as well,

becoming that last piece that

essentially completes the puzzle.

So, does this multi-media artist

have a preferred medium? “I

don’t particularly see the different

mediums I work with as separate.

They are extensions of each other.

For example, a sculpture might

become a prop in a performance,

and documented footage from the

performance goes into short films.”
