Chakalaka is pretty straightforward to make and very
tasty. There are thousands, if not millions of recipes for
it in South Africa. When calling for submissions for my
crowd-sourced book Shisanyama, I received many options,
so when developing this recipe, I looked for the common
threads of golden truth running through all the different
versions. This, then, is a triple-distilled version – a ‘best of
the best’, if you will.
One Saturday afternoon, ahead of an evening braai,
Natasha – who sent me this recipe – designed this take
on a braaibroodjie. According to her, the inspiration was
the Cape Town habit of serving preserved green figs
with everything. Truth be told, I’m from Cape Town, I love
preserved green figs and I think this recipe is absolutely
brilliant, so well done to Natasha!
