What happens when three wine minds get together? They think inside the box!
That’s what took place when Fairview owner, Charles Back, and cellarmaster,
Anthony de Jager, collaborated with sommelier Higgo Jacobs. Enter, The
Grenaches – Fairview Grenache Blanc 2018 and Fairview Grenache Noir 2018- packaged unconventionally (for premium wines) in boxes. Says Higgo: “The
project was inspired by the lack of high-quality, interesting-varietal wines in
alternative packaging that are available on the market. Both the grenache noir
and the grenache blanc were picked and vinified with delicious drinkability
at front of mind, and low alcohol levels.” The grenache blanc is aromatic with
stone fruit and a floral nuance, with a crisp palate, while the noir brims with juicy
red fruit, sour cherries, exotic spices and a bright line of acidity. Available at the

Jozi-based craft brewery Mad Giant is making headlines for all the right reasons. They
were named Grand Champion (overall best beer) at the 2018 African Beer Awards for
their flagship product, the Killer Hop pale ale. And, now, they’ve committed to ditching
their plastic packaging. Although, making the change from shrink-wrap to cardboard
was no small feat. “Paper is almost double the cost and it doesn’t last as well in an ice
bucket; but, we cannot imagine the future expense of trying to clean the ocean and
breeding sea life from scratch,” says brewmaster and founder, Eben Uys. There are
other delicious beers in the range, including Urban Legend (IPA), Mad Giant (lager),
