It wasoriginally supplied
to Durham CountyWater
Board(DCWB)to work onthe
dam contra ct at Burn hope in
Weardale in the early-1930s,
whereitwas namedGrey.
At the end of thecontra ct
it wassold to thePenrhyn
slate quarryand storedat Port
Penrhyn until 1952 when itwas
brou ghtintouse,and renamed
Glyder,following anoverhaulat
Coed-y-Parc.


Repatriation
GlyderwasexportedtoUSA
in July 1965, whereitr emained
stored untilrepatr iation in
April 2012 withformerDCWB
Avonside 0-4-0WTDurham
(206 6/1933), boughtbyPenrhyn
in 1936 andrenamedOgwen,
and ex-Penrhyn Hunslet 0-4-0ST
Winifred.

Glyderarrivedat Beamish in
May2012. Following display
in theCollieryEngineWorksin
September2015 itwasmoved
to Beamish’s workshopsforthe
startofwork to return it to steam.

Thewheelsets,re-gaugedto
Penrhyn’s 1ft10¾in-gauge,were
reve rted to original 2ftgauge
and the boiler dispatched to
Severn Valley Railway fo rrepairs
to the fireboxand smokebox,

replacementofs ome stays and
fitting new tubes.
Refurbishmenthas aimed
at retaining as far as possible
Glyder’sappearancewhen it last
worked at Penrhyn.

conventional heavy fuel oil
