As Lee’s bus belongs to an
enthusiast it has had some less
than essential amendments too
(the air ride, the re-map and
the Rotiforms are essential,
obviously). These include
smoked sequential lights front
and rear, a badgeless gloss
black grill, a splitter, a bonnet
deflector, and an Alpine base box
under the bench, to beef up the
sounds! Plus, there’s that very
nice roof rack, custom built by
Retroracks. The wheels and rack
are both nods to the ‘old school
VWs’ which were Lee’s early
love. He even owned a Beetle
at one point, until restoration
costs became too much.
Lee’s bus spends a lot of time
on the road, and makes regular
trips to the beach, which he can
now access thanks to a hoist
and a buggy. He’s been to a
number of VW shows, including
VW T Chill where the van won
‘Best Water Cooled’ and VW
Action at Santa Pod where it
was in the ‘Top 10 Everyday
Vehicles’. The joy of his bus is
that, while it’s clearly adapted
for Lee, it simply feels like an
airy, comfortable, ‘on-trend’ van.
The sliding doors on both sides
make access for both able-bodied
and wheelchair users easy, and
there’s tons of space inside to
relax. It doesn’t feel in any way
as though any compromises
have had to be made. This isn’t
merely a cool bus with adaptions
for a disabled driver, it is one
of the coolest buses out there,
period. Lee says it reminds him
every day of how lucky he is,
and how thankful he is to have
had such a special mum who
made it possible for him to regain
independence and rebuild his life.
I’d say that’s a pretty wonderful
legacy for any mum to her son.The wheels and rack are both
