Best job ever
I read with great interest The Interstater’s
column in July and was compelled to write
about my take on longer vehicles.
All very good points you made in the
article, mate. In the past I’ve been on the
receiving end of a lot of those issues you
raised.
However, I think it’s important to make
mention of the other side of the argument
too. There’s two sides to everything.
I currently drive road trains in Victoria
for what I consider to be a decent
transport company (not quads but trains
nonetheless).
I can say without a word of a lie it is
the best job I’ve ever had. In every single
respect. Work/life balance, remuneration,
safety, you name it.
I am paid very well for the work I’m
expected to do, and I am paid for every task
that I’m expected to do and for the extra
responsibilities that come with operating
a road train in urban, metropolitan and
country areas.
We are never pressured to anything
remotely unsafe and I can guarantee that
the presence of us driving road trains on
the eastern roads of Australia has minimal
to no extra impact on traffic.
As for the passing and overtaking
points you raised; I believe that it’s my
responsibility as a professional driver to do
everything I can to minimise my presence
and impact on the road.
I will always pull over whenever safe for
cars or trucks to pass if necessary or talk
to anyone behind me and get them around
me as quickly as possible, however that’s
honestly very rarely ever needed.
I just thought it was important to point
out that if done professionally, safely and
fairly, I firmly believe larger combinations
do have their place in Australia’s ever
changing transport landscape, and that is
through first-hand experience.
As always it’s the dodgy, greedy and
dangerous ones that tarnish the whole
imageofthesecombinations.
