David slayed Goliath. Truly, the quality and virtue
of a magazine is the sumofitspartsandtheitems
therein nicely presented to an audience
Salle Speaks is an example. Facts
surfaced on the club in its July 2019
edition (edited by John Bryden; club
director is Jack Hotz; offered byThe
LaSalle Appreciation Society).
The 28-pager carried only black-
and-white pictures, reminding this
reader of the days of yore when that
was about all a person could hopeto
see in published form in the era of
the Cadillac companion car, LaSalle.
Standing at the formative time of
the publication and society were 20
individuals who gave hours of dedicated
service to making their idea stick, whic
it has.
The issue under the microscope
refl ects the international nature of thee isti g orga i atio.
There is a feature on an Australian 1939LaSalleconvertible,
articles on other Australian connections,therecentaddition
of a New Zealander, a rare domestic and custom-made 1929
woodie constructed through a New Jersey dealership, and a
variety of interesting tidbits. It was among that fi nal group-
ing that the strength of the society was reported.
Nancy Hotz, LAS membership coordinator and secretary,
presented a quick summary on the society. “We LAS mem-

bersarea patientcrew.Onehastobepatientwhendealing
with cars as old as our LaSalles,” realizing the brand was
offered from 1927to1940 before being retired in favor of
a low-end Cadillacmodel. She adds that to keep costs
i line,Salle Speaks is offered in mailed
tedform or electronically by email. In-
stingly, the division among recipients
early evenly divided: 66 are mailed,
aresent electronically. Membership
henational CLC Club is a necessity,
t the additional $18 for being among
aSalle owners is certainly a bargain
r the information gained quarterly.
Thisreviewer receives a printed copy,
erstandards for annual Golden Quill
Award consideration.)
At that price, the publication seems
a real bargain for LaSalle folks. FYI,
besides members in North America,
there are others in Australia, Belgium,
Czech Republic, Denmark, France,
Italy, Luxembourg, New Zealand,
Spain,SwedenandTheNetherlands — all bound by the
commonbondofcollectorfellowship. Magnifi cent!

VINTAGE AD OF THE WEEK
BY M.J. FRUMKIN
Packard brass did a really good job showing off
what was new on the company’s new car menu with
this print ad for the 1951 lineup. With nice artwork,
a simple design and a minimum of words, the
ad showed off three new models for ‘51: The 400
Patrician, the 300 and the 200, with a couple of brief
highlights that applied to all the ‘51 offerings. The
ad boasted that Packard had “New load-to-the-road
styling,” “Stunning new, roomier Fashion Forum
interiors with ... New Perma-plait upholstery!” and
“New Packard Thunderbolt engines [that] combine
with exclusive Ultramatic Drive — now even fi ner for
‘51.”
We’re sold. Too bad the public wasn’t more recep-
tive. The 200 and 300 lines lasted only through the
1952 model year, while the Patrician name was used
through 1956.
