for a break from the
Fashion Week buzz
Best for... stylish serenity
At the southernmost end of downtown
Manhattan, Mr. C Seaport might seem
off the beaten path for the fashion crowd.
But that makes it perfect for those who
want to be in a stylish setting without
all of the chauffeured car traffic, street-
style paparazzi gridlock and overall
commotion that comes with hotels closer
to the shows. Maggio and Ignazio
Cipriani, fourth-generation brothers in the
hospitality world’s most famous family,
have packed a plush experience into the
compact 66 -room hotel, complete with a
lobby done in gold Art Deco details and
jewel-tone velvet. The same can be said
for its Italian restaurant Bellini – reliably
good for people-watching. To absorb the
Fashion Week energy in full, head across
the street to 1O Corso Como, the New
York outpost of the Italian fashion mecca
(a chic compound with a concept store,
restaurant and gallery), which will be
filled with a mix of editors and influencers
shopping between shows.Doubles from

Best for... minimalist luxury
Studio 54 founder-turned-hotel-disruptor
Ian Schrager has cracked the affordable
luxury concept with his Lower East Side
property Public. With rates from $15O
and 367 rooms, Public is big, buzzy, and
one of the chicest bargains in the city.
The aim is to give guests what they need
(the fastest WiFi in town), but not what
they don’t (so you do your own check in).
The two restaurants – Public Kitchen and
canteen-like Louis – are overseen by the
brilliant Jean-Georges Vongerichten,
and there’s more fun to be had in the three
bars (look out for regulars Adwoa Aboah
and Kim Kardashian), the rooftop terrace
and multimedia performance space
Public Arts. Rooms have a Japanese-like,
minimalist feel, with mattresses on the
‘floor’ and huge windows showcasing the
skyline. Oh, and don’t miss Trade, the hotel’s
‘retail concept’, which sells everything
from covetable bed linen to basketballs.
