Bicycling USA – July 2019

(vip2019) #1

THE STIGMATA HAS been the cyclo-
cross bike for Santa Cruz (Juliana’s
parent company) since 2007. But
many riders used it for things
other than racing. Even Santa Cruz
employees were pushing how they
rode that bike. “You look at the Stig-
matas in our building and you see
fenders on them—people are using
them for commuting, people are put-
ting bigger tires on them to ride the
cool trails we have,” says Santa Cruz
engineer Ty Buckenberger.
So Buckenberger and team made
the new Stigmata and its women’s
version, the Quincy, more versatile.
The bike can take up to 700x45mm
tires, or 650bx2.1-inch knobbies, and
it has mounts for fenders and three
bottle cages. The Juliana Quincy
shares the Stigmata’s frame but has
different finishes, a women’s saddle,
a narrower bar, and comes in a
smaller, 49cm size option, too.
The bike rips. We considered the
Open U.P. to be the best gravel bike
out there for its balanced ride and
versatility. But the new Stigmata/
Quincy presents a real challenge to
that title. Like the U.P. (and lighter
U. P. P. E. R .), t h i s b i ke i s q u ic k a n d
lively on pavement, and handles
dirt, gravel, and trails like bikes
dedicated to riding off-road. And
the frame costs less than the Open.
A similar, grin-inducing ride on all
surfaces, for a smaller price tag?
