Handguns – October-November 2019

(Greg DeLong) #1
ousstudentunderstandsthere
is a pretty significantdifference
be tween the two techniques, both of
wh ich are highly effective.
Af ter Dave’s course, I can decide
wh ich componentsof his curriculum
to adopt to my shootingstyle. Noth-
ing says I have to do everythingjust
li ke Dave, Kelly or anyone else for
th at matter. I tend to take what I like
fr om various sourcesand blend it
wi th what I already do.

TheRisk
But mixing and matchingfrom
va rious curriculumscan be risky. If
you ’re not careful, your draw stroke,
or any other shootingtechnique,
ca n become a hodgepodgeof several
me thods that’s not nearly as effec-
tive as any of the methodsas they
ar e taught. When borrowingfrom
se veral sources, you have to under-
stand the “why” behind the tech-
nique in additionto the “how.”
Do n’t get me wrong. I’m not sug-
gestingyou learn one way and close
you r mind to everythingelse. But at
som e point, you need to decide what
ma kes the most sense to you and run
wit h it.
Do your homeworkand see what
di fferentinstructorsare teaching.
Th en don’t be afraid to jump down
th e rabbit hole and immerseyour-
self in the nuancesof what’s being
ta ught. Practicediligentlyto trans-
form that knowledgeinto physical
sk ill. Once you’re confidentin your
ab ility to protect yourself with your
ha ndgun, you can scale back your
se arch for the holy grail of shooting
met hods.
At some point your journeyhas
to become more than a constant
qu est for knowledge. It should be
le ss about learningand more about
ma steringwhat you already know.
Ju st don’t become smug and think
th at what you settle on is better than
ev erythingelse out there.
