WARNERBROS.Box office source: Comscore; estimates in $ millions; ( )Weekends in release; *Territories. Broadcast source: Nielsen, live-plus-3, week of July 29. Cable TV source: Nielsen, live-plus-3 scripted series.***CBS Films is fading to black in style. The pic, based on the kids
horror book series, marks one of the winding-down company’s
best openings, while this summer’s Pavarotti is the most success-
ful music-themed doc of the year ($4.5 million).
The canine dramedy did little to reverse Fox’s recent losing
streak. If it were not owned by Disney, 20th Century Fox would
rank No. 7 in 2019 domestic market share ($265 million), far
behind even Lionsgate ($400 million).
The female-fronted mob drama, slammed by critics, is one of
Warners’ worst openings in modern times. Younger moviegoers
mostly stayed away, with 75 percent of the audience 35 and older
— including 42 percent over 50 — and only 1 percent under 18.
The official 2018 NFL season brought
ratings rebounds, but preseason
coverage is again at a low. Overnight
returns, down 15 percent, proves no
match for reality mainstays. The Paramount drama’s summer
run is nothing short of wild,
hovering at 5 million viewers in
