NZ Performance Car – September 2019

(やまだぃちぅ) #1

This is no wrap;

it’s the fruit of a

week-long stint

in the booth at

GT Refinishers.

Mike is a camo

expert and went

the extra mile

to ensure that

the job matched

the canvas.

It’s carried on

through the door

jams, under the

bonnet, and under

the guards

modeled on the 2018 four-wheel drive Huracán, so it took some
customizing by Grant to make it work, but Mike believes that the
finished product is all the better for it, as its now a one off. It was
then a midnight run on the back of a transporter up the southern
motorway from Mike’s Hampton Downs–based Mad Lab to GT
Refinishers, where Mike would spend the week being very hands-
on in the paint booth — if there is one thing that Mike does better
than anyone, it’s camo!
The amount of work that’s gone into the paintwork is mind-
blowing. Each stage of camo took three booth loads — two loads
of parts, and then the shell. Repeat that four times for each camo
layer, including complete assembly and disassembly for camo

masking; then, on top, the gloss clear, which was sanded back to
flatten the camo layers; the airbrushed black detail; the airbrushed
stencils; and, finally, the matte clear to seal it all before the few
stickers. Further, the camo extends under the guards, under the
hood, and in the jams; this is no smoke and mirror job just for show
— it’s the real deal.
Don’t for a second think that the build was all cosmetic;
after all, the car’s debut was to be on the tight confines of the
Goodwood Estate driveway at FOS 2019 with some 150,000
onlookers lining the fences. To ensure that Mike could put on the
show he expected to, it was going to need a few upgrades.
“Factory output is 580hp [433kW] and, of course, as with
