NZ Performance Car – September 2019

(やまだぃちぅ) #1
What materials do you use?
The basics are colouring pencils, Sharpie pens, Bic Vivids — a
damn lot of Vivids — a ruler, felt-tip pens, erasers that seem to
find themselves in several bits after every piece, a decent-weight
paper to prevent bleeding when using certain pens, and a laptop
for referencing photos. These are my weapons of mass destruction
when drawing.

How has your skill changed over time?
I’d say the style has changed dramatically over time, from a full-
on cartoon style to now — what I’d call a ‘new age’ car art that
combines realism and a bit of cartoon together to define my style.
I think it’s harder to notice myself, but I’m always trying to evolve;
I look back at some stuff I did early on and think, how the fruckin’
berry did I get away with that? The drawings have definitely become
more realistic — better shading, and figuring out that balance
between subtle details and over-detailing a drawing; sometimes
less detail is better, as it’s easier on the eye, whereas more can be
too much detail to take in.

Lastly, where do you hope to see your drawings in the
future?
It would be cool to do an exhibition, having it all from what I’ve done
back in the early ’00s to now, or join forces with a manufacturer
to draw concepts or retro-refurbish older models. There’s plenty of
things you’d want to see happen with your art, but we can all dream,
and it’s those dreams that push you forward — you never know
what opportunities lie ahead.

Cheers for sharing your drawings with us, Smugz.
