culverts to stabilize the roads and


began clearing the existing vegeta-


tion including trees from the fi rebase


site and to clear fi re zones around the


perimeter. Frequently, the D7s were


used to push the 290s through the


soliddirtto increaseefficiencyofthe


dirtpans.

bycivilians.Davedidnotremember


the protocolsofhowthat occurred,


onlythatthereweresomeoldarmy


trucksused,probablyWWII-vintage


CCKWs.


AnAllis Chalmers 645M front


endloaderwasusedtodigpositions


includingbunkerlocations,trenches


and revetments for the big guns.

were turned in for the new


D7E model equipped with


armored cages and some


with Rome Plows.


The 591st Engineer Company dug in just below the mountain top where the artillery was located. An Allis Chalmers 645M front end loader


removed dirt for a personnel bunker. Note the pierced steel planking (PSP) just beyond —the PSP served as ceilings in the bunkers.
