BRITS STEPPE UP
A TEAM of 27 soldiers
led by HQ 160th
Infantry Brigade and HQ
Wales deployed to Illisky
Training Area to help the
Kazakhstani military prepare
for their UN peacekeeping
mission in Lebanon.
Exercise Steppe Eagle saw
them deliver packages in
counter-IED procedures, first
aid, public order and decision
making, as well as awareness
training in conflict related
sexual violence.
The two-week visit, which
involved troops from seven
different countries, culminated
in a cordon and search serial.

SAPPERS’ NEW ANGLE
AROUND 140 Reservists from
71 Engineer Regiment have
been taking part in a multi-
national construction exercise
in Poland and Romania.
Exercise Resolute Castle, a
US-led package, is designed
to prepare engineers from
different countries to support a
rapid build-up of Nato forces in
Eastern Europe.
Three squadrons constructed
a multi-use hanger, a concrete
pad for another and a plumb
and synch ramp to be used for
the turret calibration of US
Army tanks.
“The ramp was particularly
challenging as it had to have a
precise 20 per cent angle,” said
Capt Ruth Cork.

URBAN FIGHTING FIRST
BILATERAL manouevres have taken place with
the Finnish defence forces for the first time.
More than 100 soldiers from B (Suffolk)
Company, 1st Battalion, The Royal Anglian
Regiment spent ten days in Helsinki participating
in a unique urban fighting package with the Guard
Jaeger Regiment.
Lt Joshua Beale, 2iC for B Company, said: “We conducted cordon
and search operations in wooded areas then did a ferry move back to
Santahamina Island for an attack onto urban structures.
“The naval move is not something we’ve done before, certainly not in my
experience, so it was a real eye-opener.”
Col Rainer Kuosmanen, deputy commander of the Finnish unit and
the director of the exercise, said: “We know that the British Army is very
experienced in various operations and holds a lot of expertise and we
benefitted from that.
“We, as the subject matter experts here
in Finland, also have certain tactics and
techniques which we can share – this is
the core of joint training.”
