Lasting impression
When I was growing up in Cincinnati,I hadtheprivilege
of seeing work by FrankDuveneck[American,1848–1919]attheCincinnati
Art Museum. Duveneck,whostudiedpaintinginMunichwithGerman
artist Wilhelm Leibl [1844–1900],wasborninCovington,Ky.,justacross
the Ohio River fromCincinnati,andeventaughtfora timeatthe
Cincinnati Art Academy.Hisstrong,painterly,chiaroscurostyle—with
bold brushwork and thickapplications—isverymuchinevidenceinthis
1871 portrait. The artist,throughhispaintingandteaching,influenced
many renownedAmericanartistsincludingmyownmentor,
John Johansen [1876–1964];myteacher,RobertBrackman
[1898–1980]; and Brackman’steacherRobertHenri[1865–1929].
