Pipes Pareidolia

Nature isn’t the only source of pareidolia. It can be
found anywhere—even on city streets. For exam-
ple, here are standpipes on the streets of New
York City (below, left). When I was a kid, my best
friend and I would walk up to them and pet them
like they were little creatures. For fun, I started
making art featuring them, giving each a distinct
personality. Maybe they were royal standpipes!
