76 Artists Magazine October 2019
pieces are infused with aspects of technology
and engineering at play with the freedom of
fantasy. In her piece Inner Workings (above),
the main subject is a large tree, its branches
curling wildly inward while birds fly outward
and a girl swings toward an open field. Within
the trunk and among the roots, the painting
reveals gears at work—the cogs of a machine.
In describing this piece, Law writes of “the
strange and beautiful tie of the rules of math-
ematics and physics to the organic wonder
and growth of life and nature.” It seems that
melding the worlds of fact and fantasy comes
naturally to Law.
