Drink to
perform
If you struggle to keep
going as fast or as hard
during summer workouts,
try drinking a glass of water
packed with crushed iced
beforehand. A study by
exercise physiologists at
the University of Texas
Southwestern Medical
Center, US, showed how
a slushy ice drink helped
athletes keep their body
temperature down during
exercise so they could
perform for longer. Another
way to adapt to warm-
weather workouts?
Counterintuitive as it may
seem, having a hot bath
straight after exercise will
help. Do this six nights in a
row and you’ll adapt and
improve your hot-weather
exercise performance,
according to a 2018 study
in Frontiers in Physiology.

Fake
your fizz
Rose, Pimm’s, prosecco and Sangria go down
way too easily on warm summer afternoons. To
curb the amount you drink, choose flutes over wider
glasses. A study at Cornell University in New York, US,
found that wide glasses caused participants to pour
11.9 per cent more wine than when using narrow ones.
Making sure your glass is on a solid surface also curbs
how much is poured compared with pouring while you
hold the glass, the scientists found. Ultimately, drink
choice matters too, of course – spritzing wine
with soda water or fizzy mineral water always
works well in summer, and means
you get less dehydrated.
