FEEL-GOOD THERAPY
Feeling stressed? It could be worth trying acupuncture. This ancient
therapy is proving so effective at reducing the symptoms of anxiety,
the British Acupuncture Council (BAC) is now calling for GPs to offer
treatments on prescription. Recent studies have found that acupuncture is
as useful for anxiety as drug treatments and psychological therapies, such
as cognitive behavioural therapy. It’s believed the treatment helps calm
the brain when under stress. ‘Acupuncture has been shown to increase the
release of endorphins, the body’s feel-good chemicals, which play an
important role in regulating physical and emotional stress responses, such
as pain, heart rate and blood pressure,’ says Mark Bovey, head of research
at the BAC. To find a qualified acupuncturist, visit acupuncture.org.uk.
