WHITEWASH

DESPITE losing almost half of its eight
scheduled bouts in the week prior to the
show, this Sunday afternoon Frank Duffin
promotion at the Municipal Hall certainly
wasn’t lacking in atmosphere.
The number of tickets sold was
undoubtedly hit by the late withdrawals,
with just a smattering of punters on the
usually packed balcony - but the five
home boxers who did remain all boasted
their own noisy pockets of followers. Just
as well, though, that there were few if any
supporters of the afternoon’s visitors who,
pretty much as expected, failed to win a
single session.
The one shared round of the afternoon
came on the card’s only six-rounder, a
light-heavyweight encounter between
Fleetwood’s unbeaten “Dangerous” Dan
Catlin and Llanelli-based Pole Robert
Studzinski – but even that was wiped
out when Robert, who spat his gumshield
several times, was counted by referee
John Latham in the dying moments of the
second when after been tagged only the
ropes kept him from going down.

Clash of the afternoon was the four
between local lad Sam Larkin, who
worked well behind the jab to open an
early lead, and Hull’s Luke Fash who,
increasingly feisty, didn’t find favour with
all of the locals.
Those watching with an unbiased eye
however enjoyed the fare with Larkin a
worthy winner, but made to work.
Jamie Kirkpatrick was the third man,
as was the case when Accrington’s Artif
“Sniper” Ali opened proceedings with
a shut-out four round success against
Islington’s Jules Phillips. What Artif will

have learned from the exercise is open to
question.
The two remaining contests, the first
refereed by Mr Latham and the second
by Kirkpatrick, brought 40-36 victories for
Blackpool’s unbeaten Alex McCloy over
Glasgow’s still-winless Gary McGuire
and for popular Earby novice Josh
Holmes, who dominated throughout
against Braintree’s Dylan Draper.

THE VERDICTA truncated version of
what was initially planned, but the
fans still enjoy it.

FIELDS DAY

BARELY a month passes without
hard-working promoter Tommy
Owens putting on a show and
while promotions up and down the
country the same night were falling
by the wayside at the 11th hour
his latest offering in the Holte Suite
at Villa Park went ahead without a
hitch.
Not for the first time in recent
months, game Brummie Ben
Fields raised a few eyebrows. Hot
on the heels of a revenge win over

Maguire, who was cut both above
the eye and on the nose.

THE VERDICTThe fifth show of
the year at this venue and the
promoter is showing no signs of
slowing.

Manchester’s Kane Gardener and
a draw against home man Denis
Denikajev at York Hall three weeks
earlier, he had his arm raised again
as Shaun Messer adjudged him a
59-57 winner over Burntwood six-
footer Sean Daly, who had won all
eight over the distance.
Ben travels again later this month,
for a booking against former English
lightweight champ Lee Appleyard,
in Rotherham. He won’t be there
just to make up the numbers.
In charge for two other bouts
and scoring the rest for trialist Chris
Dean, Dudley official Mr Messer
adjudged Stourbridge’s Sam “The
Savage” Eggington a shutout
40-36 winner over Islington’s busy
and durable Jordan Grannum.
He also had Birmingham’s Cori
Gibbs, in his first bout for nine

months, winning by the same
score against Stockport’s Jamie
Quinn.
In those he scored from ringside
there was another winner from
the Gibbs family, super-lightweight
Tion Gibbs securing career victory
number seven with a 60-56 success
against Wolverhampton’s unbeaten
Clayton Bricknell.
In the one remaining six,
Birmingham lightweight Ishmael
Ellis won an entertaining bout
against Canning Town’s Lee Hallett
by a closer score of 58-56.
Winners over four rounds were
Brummie lightweight Kaisee
Benjamin and Coventry bantam
David Seymour, who respectively
triumphed 40-36 and 39-37
against Thornton Heath’s Richard
Samuels and Middleton’s Steven
