Surf Girl – July 2019

(backadmin) #1
writing, is only the second surfer after Layne Beachley to
win more than 300 heats.
Carissa Moore burst onto the pro scene in 2010 after a
series of wildcard appearances showed the world that she
was a champion in the making. After making the final in six
of the seven events in 2011, she became the first Hawaiian
woman since Margo Oberg in 1981 to win a World Title.
She has amassed 21 contest wins from 87 appearances
(equal fourth most ever), and three world titles in her 10
years as a full-time pro. Even more incredible has been her
ability to stay injury free, not missing a single event since
her rookie season.

A Level Playing Field (2016 onwards)
After the dominance of just two surfers, Gilmore and
Moore, between 2007-15, the balance of power has
shifted with the emergence of Tyler Wright and Caroline
Marks on the world tour.
After finishing second, twice in the world title race
between 2013-14, Tyler Wright finally broke through in
2016, in one of the most dominant seasons the World Tour
has ever seen. She stormed to five contest victories, the
first surfer to do so since Gilmore in 2008, and set a new
WSL record of 38 heat wins in a single season. She was so
dominant that she clinched the trophy with one event still
remaining. Her combination of power turns, pace, vertical
hacks and fierce determination left every other competitor
in her wake as she showed little regard for the reputations
of her fellow surfers. Her strength, fitness and progressive
style made it impossible for her competitors to score
