world championship career.

The Roxy team.

O

ne of biggest game changers in women’s
surfing in the early 90s was the birth of Roxy.
Roxy started off as a swimwear brand,
then developed into a full-blown surf brand
with its revolutionary female boardshorts, which offered
fit, flexibility and femininity in the surf and changed the
women’s surf market.
In 1994 Lisa Andersen, then the reigning World
Champion, became the first member of the newly founded
Roxy team and graced the covers of surf mags. Lisa went
on to win three more world titles and crossed over into
mass-market fame, becoming one of the most influential
surfers of the 90s. (You can see Lisa’s influence in the
film Trouble, which is currently available to download on
iTunes.) Lisa was joined by an inspiring team of surfers
such as Chelsea Georgeson, Kassia Meador, Sofia
Mulanovich, and the Roxy surf team have dominated
women’s competitive surfing ever since.
Over the decades Roxy has been one of the most
innovative brands that has inspired and influenced a
generation of surf girls. By the beginning of the 2000s
Roxy stores were popping up everywhere and offering the
Roxy surf lifestyle to girls around the world. Then, in 2013,
Roxy developed a fitness line, combining fashion with
performance active wear. Now Roxy offers products for
every aspect of active life, from wetsuits to snowboards,
lifestyle to fitness. Today Lisa Andersen, Stephanie
Gilmore, Caroline Marks, Kelia Moniz and the rest of the
team exemplify the camaraderie, style and spirit of Roxy.
We had a chat with two long-standing Roxy Girls,
Monyca Eleogram and Bruna Schmitz.

MONYCA ELEOGRAM
Monyca, what does being part of the Roxy family
mean to you?
It means being a part of a sisterhood. A group of women
who shred, have the most fun, and support each other
through it all. As we grow and evolve in new experiences,
Roxy shares in our journey.
What’s it like to travel the world with Roxy?
Life is good! We have our own challenges like anyone
else. We learn so much from each other and are always
supportive and honest. The travelling can get tough at

times but being together is just the best. We’re just trying
to make the most of it, be present, and seize the day.
Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?
I’d love to be killing it with our fruit farm, definitely surfing,
and maybe have kids! Still making time for travel with my
husband. I want to be a Roxy girl through it all.

BRUNA SCHMITZ
Bruna, what does being part of the Roxy family mean
to you?
It’s a dream come true. At a very young age I decided I
wanted to pursue surfing and travel the world, so to be
able to do that and be a part of the best surf brand in the
biz is everything I dreamed of.
What changes have you seen at Roxy over the
years?
I don’t think there have been big changes as Roxy has
managed to stay true to their identity throughout the whole
time I’ve been a part of it, which is 14 years now. Roxy has
a huge legacy to inspire young girls and women to pursue
their dreams and I feel the message is very much there.
