Ashley Bates’ résumé speaks for itself. Last season as a ju-
nior, she averaged 17.4 ppg while shooting 46 percent from
the field. She put up a season-high 34 against Winthrop back
in March. On defense, her knack for reading passing lanes re-
sulted in an average of 4.3 spg, placing her top-3 among DI
players. She also finished with 125 steals, breaking the Big
South’s 31-year record and was named Big South POY and
DPOY, the first female to win both accolades since the con-
ference began awarding DPOYs in the 2005-06 season.

Kai Toews has a pass-first mentality. At 7.7 apg, the Tokyo
native ranked second in the nation in assists behind Murray
State’s Ja Morant. The true freshman started in 32 of 33 of
the Seahawks’ games, orchestrating UNCW’s offense and
getting each of his teammates involved. He twice dished out
a career-high 14 dimes and was named a finalist for the Kyle
Macy Award, an honor that recognizes the nation’s top fresh-
man. Toews tallied 253 dimes, becoming the Colonial Athlet-
ic Association’s new single season leader.—Drew Ruiz
