Before The Simple Life, before Tinkerbell the chihuahua, before

The Hottie & the Nottie, before the perfumes, the endless movie cameos,

before she became famous simply for being famous, Paris Hilton – ‘the

celebutante kid in a candy store’ – was tailed by Tatler in London, where

she was working on a film called Nine Lives. When the writer first met

her for the story, Paris emerged from her trailer wearing – what else? –

a baby-blue velour tracksuit. Next, Tatler went to Paris’ 21st birthday

party at The Stork Rooms, Mayfair (one of many such 21sts, including

parties in New York, LA, Vegas and two in Japan), where Paris wore

the tiny chainmail dress covered in Swarovski crystals that has since

become legendary. ‘It weighed, like, 30 pounds,’ she said on the Tatler

shoot the next day. She also spoke about her dog, Prince; her sister,

Nicky (now a Rothschild); her boyfriend, model Jason Shaw, and her

nickname: Star.
