Prompted by the lack of quality

produce available in rural New

Hampshire, an adventurous couple

break free, go off the grid, and

grow it themselves.

WHAT TO

PLANT FIRST

“As soon as the ground can
be worked, we start planting
the peas,” Bill Elliott says.
Rather than confi ning their
peas to a fi xed area, Bill and his
wife, Eileen, have a movable
fence (they use deer fencing) to
give the crop a fresh location
each year in their succession
plan. Because peas prefer cool
weather, they plant early for
harvest in late June. After
the peas fi nish producing,
they remove the fence and
members of the cabbage
family take the spot.
