CRITICS’ CHOICE
PHILIP MOULD has a personal
stake in tonight’s case, an
18th-century family portrait of
a young man in the prime of his
life, as it was he who spotted the
painting they are investigating
— it was hanging in a house he
was visiting. The owners
believed it was
painted by ground-breaking
female artist Maria Cosway,
but Philip was convinced that
it was actually the work of the
Regency portrait-painting great
Thomas Lawrence — and worth
half a million pounds. While
Philip digs into the technical
side of the painting, Fiona Bruce
(pictured with Mould) unpicks
its history, tracing its path
down through the centuries into
the hands of the current owners.
PICK OF THE DAY
IN THE WILD
Serengeti, 8pm, BBC1
AT THE peak of the dry season, the
plains of the Serengeti are a tinderbox.
With a firestorm looming, the animals’
battle for survival ramps up a notch.
Jasari and his wild dog family are

black-maned lions are threatening
Kali’s pride, and Bakari the baboon
refuses to abandon his adopted baby.
BETTER LIVING
Eat, Shop, Save, 8.30pm, ITV

in which she sets families an eight-week
challenge to eat better, get fitter and
save money. Can she persuade the
Lahartys from Bury (pictured with
Singh) to forego their regular
takeaways and rein in their
expensive chocolate habit?
WORKPLACE VISIT
Britain’s Giant Pet
Food Factory, 9pm, Ch4
THE Mars company may be famous
for chocolate, but they actually make
more pet food, churning out a million
pouches of the stuff each day at their
factory in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.
The cameras head inside the gates of a
firm that encourages employees to bring
their dogs to work, provided they obey
the company’s ‘petiquette’.
