T

he 14th National Convention
organized by the United Nations
in association with the Global
Compact Network India on the
theme “Sustainable Development Goals:
Pioneering Solutions for India” held
recently in Mumbai saw representative
collaboration and participation from
various sectors — public, private, non-
profit and Government.

The theme of the convention put
emphasis on the real, on-ground actions
that businesses need to take to make a
real impact on achieving the SDGs while
also creating economic value for the
nation.

The prime focus of the convention
was to showcase the respective
ideologies, methodologies and most
importantly, case studies depicting the
wide implementation of sustainable
innovations and leaderships taken up by
various companies and organizations in
India.

Kamal Singh, Executive Director
and Head, United Nations GCNI,

who successfully led this convention,
stressed the need for all stakeholders
including the youth to work together
and in collaboration towards achieving
the SDGs in a time bound manner.
He also stated the Global Compact
Network of India is continuously striving
to include the youth in this endeavour
and that is why they specially included
the youth achievers awards into the
convention.
Sameer Unhale, CEO of Thane Smart
City Project, and a panelist at the event,
said that it is important to engage
children at the grassroots and the
school level. His organization has been

conducting various events to connect
children with this larger aim of achieving
the SDGs.
Erwin Steinhauser, MD & CEO,
Sandvik Asia, who was a speaker
at the event, said that the potential
of the youth to achieve these SDGs
is amazing. His company has been
organizing tinkering labs in public
schools to build a new way of learning
in schools. He emphasized that these
kind of initiatives like awards and
school engagement programmes will
give impetus to achieving the SDGs in
a practical and sustained manner.
